Opportunities for Employees and Alumni

Are you a staff member, faculty member, graduate assistant or alumni looking to work alongside students who are doing great things for the community? Consider volunteering for NIU Cares Day!

Project Site Leaders

Project Site Leaders (PSLs) are assigned to a handful of project sites and serve as a primary contact for teams assigned to those sites during the day of service. While PSLs primarily assist with communication between the student volunteers, the site supervisor and home base, it is possible that they may also be called upon to assist in the case of an unforeseen situation that requires staff intervention. PSLs can be faculty members, staff members or graduate assistants from all areas of the university. The time commitment is generally five to six hours.

An online volunteer training is provided a few weeks prior to the event. Volunteers will have the option to register for a training when they register as a Project Site Leader. Registration will open in February 2018.

Each volunteer receives a t-shirt and must be able to provide his/her own transportation between their assigned project sites. Serving as a PSL can be a great opportunity to connect with students outside the classroom as well as serve the community.

Other Opportunities

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to get NIU Cares Day ready each year, and we appreciate support of all types. The NIU Cares Day committee is frequently looking for donations, including financial contributions, food items, office supplies (badge holders, pens, printer paper, etc.), art materials (markers, construction paper, crayons, hole punches, etc.), and building supplies (heavy-duty garbage bags, work gloves, lightly-used garden tools, etc.). NIU Cares Day Committee

We are always looking for new and dynamic individuals to serve on the planning committee for NIU Cares Day. Serving on this committee is a unique opportunity to network across the university and to use your talents for an extremely worthwhile event. The committee convenes each November and is open to students, faculty, and staff. We request a six-month commitment from each member. There are four sub-committees:

  • Campus Recruitment: Informing and recruiting our volunteer teams from the student body using various marketing concepts. This committee is also in charge of Team Leader orientations prior to the event.
  • Community Recruitment: Informing and recruiting project sites with local community agencies and not-for-profit organizations about NIU Cares Day and assisting them with the registration process. Each committee member serves as a primary contact with one or more area organizations leading up to the event.
  • Logistics: Coordinate Kickoff activities including registration, transportation, program evaluation, food & supply distribution, and A/V.
